Written Directions

From the GSO airport, take NC-68 North to US-158 West (Stokesdale). 158 will turn into NC-65 West. Follow NC 65 to Stokeburg Rd (end of NC 65) and turn right. Turn right again onto Main St (US 311). Follow US-311 to NC-89 West (the highways diverge at the other side of Walnut Cove). Follow NC-89 to NC-66 South (turn left onto NC-66). Follow NC-66 to Kernersville and continue straight onto E Mountain Street. E Mountain Street will turn into W Market St (and lead you back to the starting point).

Scenery

The Sauratown Mountains, (Pronounced like Sara not Sour) are sometimes called "the mountains away from the mountains". The vast majority of the range is located in Stokes County, and even though the range occupies only 5% of Stokes County's area, it dominates the county's scenery from almost every direction. The Sauras rise sharply 800 to 1,700 feet (244 to 518 meters) above the surrounding terrain. The Sauratown Mountains were named after the "Sauras", a Native American tribe that lived in the area before European settlers arrived in the early 1700s. The range consists of rugged, heavily forested ridges frequently broken by large quartzite rock cliffs that can be seen for miles. Route attractions include the Moratock Iron Furnace, Hanging Rock State Park, The Dan River Company, and Carolina Ziplines. Mountains, forests, and farmland.

Drive Enjoyment

Well maintained roads all along the route (primary roads/highways). Some of the best twisties that the Piedmont Triad area has to offer are on this route - all within an hour drive of GSO/Winston.

Tourism Opportunities

Walnut Cove - The Milk Bar and the last branded gas station (Marathon) for 40 miles. Danbury - River Rock Cafe, last unbranded gas station for 30 miles. Rural Hall - Dari-O Resturant. Kernersville - The Empourium.

I haven't ridden the entire loop, this review is just the 66 portion from Hanging Rock to Hwy 89. I stumbled onto this road while looking for a non-highway/scenic route to King, NC from the Pilot Mtn area.

The asphalt is excellent and there was very little traffic on this Sunday afternoon/evening. I did it two-up and will likely go back with a camera mounted.

I have ridden most available routes from the Mt. Airy area to the parkway (Pipers Gap, Orchard Gap, Fancy Gap and Squirrel spur) and this road is nearly as tight and twisty as any of them except Pipers. But the surface is MUCH better.

I rode this route this past Sunday. A thoroughly entertaining ride, especially the area near Hanging Rock State Park. I highly recommend it.
