Written Directions

You start this trip at the intersection of US Highway 74 and NC Route 28 and simply head south on Route 28 to Franklin, NC.

Scenery

Nothing is better than riding through the woods, along waterfalls. This road will take you to four water falls, three of them are easy access to. You can drive you vehicle under Bridal Veil, you can walk under Dry Falls, and the other I can't spell, you can see from the road. Glenn Falls requires some walking.

Drive Enjoyment

If you like turns, switch backs, nice black top, this is the road for you. Most people like the Dragons Tail or Deal's Gap, I like this road better. Less traffic and safer.

Tourism Opportunities

There are no shopping, camping, restaurants. However, along US highway 74 there are plenty of amenities and if you continue on Route 28 south as it passes through Franklin and merges with Highway 64, you can take this into Cashiers where you will find gas stations, food stops, etc. Close to the bottom of route 28 there is a Gem Store and they will give you a FREE MAP of all the waterfalls in the area. Stop in and get a FREE MAP. Take the entire trip down route 28 then follow the road into Cashiers for lunch and gas. Let me know what you think about this road, I believe it to be one of the best roads I've ever been on in North Carolina and that includes the Dragon's Tail. This is my fifth year going to N.C. to ride. My friends and I know N.C. (Maggie Valley area) pretty well by now. Email me at: .

I agree with other comments, this is a GREAT ride! However, this description above is not quite accurate. The waterfalls are all south of Franklin on the way to Highlands. That part of Hwy 28 is not highlighted. From Franklin north to Hwy 74 is just excellent, with very little traffic and lots of twisties. Ride the whole stretch from Hwy 74 south to Highlands and continue on Hwy 64 to Brevard if you want more ammenities. Of course Franklin makes a great homebase for hitting all the local roads, with plenty of motels and food.

28 is fantastic all the way into Georgia. The section most beautiful is between Franklin and Highlands where all the waterfalls are. However if you continue on 28 all the way to where it meets 107 in GA then go left on 107 back toward Cashiers, NC is a great loop. Highly recommended..

This is unquestionably my favorite road in the southeast. It's a must ride for anyone traveling to the area. The Cherohala and the Dragon are great rides, but don't really compare to this stretch of highway. It feels like a self propelled roller coaster to me. It's a nearly non-stop series of left and right handers with a seamless transition between them. For an incredible ride, set up a route that connects the Dragon, Cherohala and the upper and lower sections of 28.
