Written Directions

This route is part of the 1500 mile Alaska Highway. This section, Yukon Rt. 1 runs from Whitehorse to the Alaska Border 20 miles past Beaver Creek. In Haines Junction you will need to make a right turn to remain on the Alaska Highway Rt. 1

Scenery

This a very scenic ride. You start off in the Takhini River valley with mountains visible to the sides. Past Haines Junction you will ride along the shoreline of Kluane Lake, through Destruction Bay. After Kluane Lake you're in another valley all the way to Beaver Creek. There is a lot of wildlife along this route also.

Drive Enjoyment

This route is mostly all sweepers with long straight sections. There are a few hills but nothing to extreme. The pavement is much improved from years past. As always up north you have to be aware of frost heaves, potholes and gravel breaks. Gas is spread out up north. Gas up in Haines Jct. Destruction Bay and Beaver Creek.

Tourism Opportunities

The tourism opportunities are limited mostly to the few towns spread out along the route. There is food and lodging in Haines Jct., Destruction Bay and Beaver Creek

This section of the highway has endless views all the way to the Alaska Border. The scenery is particularly nice along the shores of Kluane Lake. Haines Junction is the main stop along this section for lodging, gas and food. The Talbot Arm in Destruction Bay has gas, food and rooms near the lake. Beaver Creek is the last stop before the border. The pavement up here is much improved but has some rough areas to it.

I rode it in 2014. Beautiful scenery! Lots of wildlife. Watch out for frost heaves.
