Written Directions

From anywhere in the Simi Valley CA across the hills to Fillmore, CA. Get on the 118 (Ronald Reagan freeway) and head west. Take Princeton Ave exit and turn left at end of ramp, you'll go under the highway and see Simi HD on your left as you keep going straight on Princeton. Follow Princeton as it curves going into Moorepark CA and take a right on Spring Road and head up the hill. You will come to a T, and take a right on Walnut Canyon Road (AKA Route 23). This road will take you over the hills and twisties into Fillmore.

Scenery

It's California, so don't expect a lot of green. But, you do get some good twisties, and some good views of hills (they call them mountains here, but not like CO). Then on the other side you drop into an irrigated valley with fruit trees, etc.

Drive Enjoyment

The road itself is good, but be on the lookout for dirt, sand and debris. There is a gravel pit up there, so trucks come in and out, and dirt gets on the road. Also some of the turns are very sharp switchbacks.

Tourism Opportunities

There are good places to stop and eat, get gas, etc. on either side. On the Moorpark side, try Rock and Roll Pizza (right off the road) and in Fillmore take a left at the stoplight to go to Ay Ay Chihuahua for good Mexican.

I take this ride ALL the time. I leave Woodland Hills, thru Box Canyon and down to the 118 to Princeton or 1st St. Grimes Canyon is a short, but seriously fun little stretch. Often, I see riders positioning themselves to take more than a single run trough it. Managing the traffic is the key. Earlier is better.

BTW...This is the route many follow on their way up to Ojai, Lake Casitias, Santa Barbara, or Hwy. 33 into Bakersfield or Frazier Park. Makes a great loop if you go over to the coast and into the Santa Monica Mountains.

Great stopping points are Deer Creek Lodge, Neptune's Net and The Rock Store. Just 2-weeks before the big fire, I noticed Mulholland, from Leo Cabrillo to Decker Canyon, was freshly paved and smooth as a baby's butt! I've ridden it since after the fire and one needs to be cautious of debris in the road from time to time.

SR 23, aka Grimes Canyon, is a great but short road to hop over from Simi Valley to Fillmore. There is sometimes sand at the bottom of the hill on the Fillmore side, but only in couple of corners. The road condition is excellent and traffic depends on day and time of day...
