Truly a wonderful ride with great scenery. I've ridden this twice, both times west to east and both times was blessed with great weather though pretty chilly early on as I started in the morning on each ride.

Beautiful ride. Little traffic. Much of the route is through scenery, rather than just seeing it from a distance. Loved the flavored shake at the Strawhouse Cafe'--just right on a hot day!

I was looking forward to CA-299 AND 36. Unfortunately for me, 36 was closed for repairs 7a-7p in Aug. 2018. I was on a 9-day tour around Cali. From LA, I took I-5 into the Bay area and watched the Warriors win game-7. The following day, I headed up the coast to Guerneville for a couple days of concerts and wine tasting. Then, I left for Hwy. 299. Got cold and wet coming into Arcata. Then, up the hills through really fun banked 2-lane wide curves. Got to experience some high speed turns...something my 23* of lean angle rarely allows. Lotta fun! Stay in Weaverville overnight at what turned out to be a popular (and affordable) motel that a lot of other bikers stayed at. I was right at home spinning yarns and drinking cold ones before putting it to bed that night.

The Arcata Marsh, Just a few short miles off the 299, Stop in town to one of the lunch venues like the Big Blue Cafe, Brio or Hole in the wall to pick up a picnic and then go hang and watch the beauty you will find at our marsh.

be sure to visit the coast if your are touring the 299, My favorites are the Arcata Marsh, Trinidad, and samoa.

Bring your fishing pole, Wiskey town lake has the best trout fishing you will find anywhere, Three kinds Brook trout, Kokie and Rainbow trout. There are magical places around the lake where you just drop a line and you will be pulling up healthy fish every few minutes! There are even a few places where you can light up the grill and cook your catch right on the lake!
