Written Directions

Access from the south off of Ararat, VA, or from the north via the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Hwy 58. Ararat, VA to Meadows of Dan, VA This is Virginia road 614

Scenery

from Ararat, VA Squirrel Spur Rd starts with winding turns along side cow pastures, tabacco fields, and even pumpkin patches. The road traverses for 10 miles or so, with some nice twisties. There are a couple of pull offs to rest, take in the view, have a snack. High vistas showing the surrounding mountains.

Drive Enjoyment

This road has some nice sweeping curves, and twisties. There is one or two switchbacks as you climb the mountain. The pavement is good, typical rural road. No potholes, but the occasional gravel from driveways.

Tourism Opportunities

On Ararat Highway, prior to going north on Squirrel Spur Rd, there are one or two gas stations, and one cafe in Ararat, VA. After this, you will not come across another gas station/restaurant until you get to Meadows of Dan. There are several gas stations, restaurants, and a nice candy factory, Nancy's Candy Factory on Hwy 58, go east on Hwy 58 from Squirrel Spur Rd.

This road would be a 5-Star road if it weren't for the condition of the road. I agree with the author, I'd give it a 3, as I consider a gravel road with potholes a 1, and a well packed gravel road to be a 2.
The surface of the road is "grainy" and does not inspire any confidence on a sport bike that you have any great deal of traction available in the turns. It is NOT full of tar snakes or pot holes, just the surface is very tired and aged, the kind of road surface where you can kick aggregate out of the blacktop with your boot with little effort.
If you are riding a bagger or touring bike with limited lean angles you'll be OK, but I do not feel at all comfortable on a sport bike going around the corners on this road at any speed I would consider "fun" were the condition of the road surface in newer condition.
It's a fun ride, but if I'm heading up to, or down from Meadows of Dan, I tend to take Hwy 58 or Hwy 8.

I have ridden this road on my Heritage Softail, my recentlly aquired DR-650 and my old Jeep CJ-7 and I enjoy it with all of them. Very nice road with much of the higher elevation section (where most of the houses are) resurfaced in the last 18 months or so. The previous review is from 2015 and that may explain the complaints about he surface. The surface is not great in the lowest sections just off of the Ararat Hwy. But it is smooth asphault before it gets curvy and all the way to the top. At the top, there are a few miles of tar/gravel surface but its decent and better than average tar/gravel surface. There are several spots where you can access the parkway before Meadows of Dan if you prefer to avoid the more populated parts of the road.
