Written Directions

Simply start in Roseburg, OR and head east on Route 138. Once you pass Diamond Lake, you'll be heading south on Route 138 and at this point you should follow the signs to Crater Lake as there are multiple ways to enter the park so choose whichever you desire.

Scenery

Highway 138 from Roseburg is quite scenic following along the Umpqua River for many miles. The scenery gets quite spectacular once reaching Crater Lake National Park and especially the Crater Lake Rim Road. But beware that the rim road is only open all the way around during very late spring to early autumn. There is a plethora of scenic stops all around the rim so be sure to bring your camera. I actually rode from Blaine Washington to Crater Lake, but it was too long a ride to include in this post.

Drive Enjoyment

The road is of excellent quality with lots of high speed sweeping curves. And many wide spots in the road to stop and take photos or just rest. Be sure to gas up in Roseburg as there are no stations until you reach the Rim Road of Crater Lake.

Tourism Opportunities

There is little to no eateries along the way to the park but there are several places to get a meal once in the park.

I highly recommend this ride. Honestly, the pictures above do not do Crater Lake justice. When the weather is clear, the reflections off the lake are indescribable. I would have given it a higher rating if it were not for all the tourist traffic (motorhomes, etc.) and the log trucks along the route. Beware if you go in August as the Monarch butterflies migrate south through this area. They are especially heavy around the 4000 to 5000 foot level (at least, they were in mid-August, 2008). Be sure to wear a full-face with visor!
