Written Directions

Just as you cross the New River on WV20 in Hinton, there is a turnoff for the River Road going north. Along the way you enter the New River Gorge National Park and can stop at the pullouts to view Brooks Falls and take the 1/2 mile trail to Sandstone Falls. The actual road number is WV26, but it doesn't have any signs until you've gone about 5 miles in. The route is the same coming out.

Scenery

You are along the wider section of New River, nearly marshy, but as you go along you pass rapids and falls. The mountainside is to your left as you head up. Brooks Falls has a deck observation area and Sandstone Falls has a trail that takes you to an island then to the view of the Sandstone Falls. You can see them from pullouts on WV 20, but they are very high up and hard to see. On the river road you are at the water's edge.

Drive Enjoyment

The road is well maintained and is two-lanes. There road is a continuous curvy road at the water's edge with a couple of strong twisties along the way.

Tourism Opportunities

The town of HInton is just prior to the turnoff and is an historic town, but is a good-sized town for southern West Virginia.
