Written Directions

This trip begins and ends in downtown Culpeper, VA.

Head north on Main St / BUS US 15/29. Continue onto Main St / Rt 729.

Turn left at Eggbornsville Rd/State Route 729. NOTE: this is a narrow county road, running through farmland and hills for about 19 miles.

Turn left at Lee Hwy/US-211 W for 11 miles.

Turn left onto US 522 S for about 3/4 mile.

Turn right onto Ft Valley Rd/VA-231 S for about 16 miles.

Turn left onto Rt. 609 / W Hoover Rd. Note: this is also a narrow country road, running through farmland and hills for about 10 miles.

Turn left at US 29 N back to Culpepper (BUS US 29N)

Scenery

Beautiful farm country, then running south along the eastern base of the Shenandoah Mountains, then more farm country back to Culpeper.

Drive Enjoyment

Combination of narrow country roads, which are in good shape and nice turns; two lane highway (Rt 231) and four-lane divided highways, but even they run through pretty farm country.

Tourism Opportunities

This is a single tank trip, so fill up before heading out. Culpeper has some cool shops downtown and Frost Cafe is a good place for bite. Not much between Culpeper and Sperryville, which has a few places to stop, shop and eat.

Great ride. We live in Fredericksburg, and love the Blue Ridge. The first leg out of Culpeper is outstanding farm country, very bucolic and long settled. Old Churches and graveyards, Rhappahanock County had a bigger population in 1840 than today. Hwy. 211 has several wineries, beautiful estates. The mountain views along this high speed highway are breathtaking. Take a quick side tour to Washington, VA, surveyed by George Washington in 1740. Home of Little Washington IN, 5-star restaurant. Sperryville - have brunch at Thornton River Grill - excellent. Ft. Valley pike past "Old Rag" mountain, lovely. And finally, more bucolic, established farmsteads along 609 back to 29 and Culpeper. Very enjoyable.

Please only come through Sperryville if you're on a quiet bike and going the speed limit. The good people that live in Sperryville are tired of the lowd bikes and speeding.

Rode this route on the July 4th weekend. It was a good ride. The views are nice as it goes parallel to the foot hills of Shenandoah for few miles. Some of the roads are narrow and are very twisty so have to be careful about the speed. Overall a good ride which starts at Culpeper
