I like to start this ride in Mechanicsburg. You can access Rt944 from 11/15 or Interstate 81. Begin the trip heading west on 944 through Enola and Mechanicsburg. RT 944 will turn left just after Burnhiesle Bridge Road towards Carlisle. When you reach the T in the road at the intersection of 944 and 34, I recommend making a left turn onto 34. You will see 944 West again .5 miles on your right with a sign for state game lands. Follow 944 west to 233 North. This will take you towards Colonel Denning State Park. Turn right onto 850 east and follow back to route 34 towards Carlisle. Make a right turn onto 34 and follow through Shermansdale to the top of the mountain. Rt 34 will descend to your right, but continue straight and you will return to 944 where you turned left at the beginning of the trip.
On this loop you will pass through farm land, mountains, state parks, small towns and along a scenic stream.
As with most PA roads, the conditions vary. On one section of 944 for about 2 miles you will cross several draining pipes that have caused some bumps in the pavement.
There are several places to eat along the road as well as plenty of fuel available in Shermansdale, Carlisle, Landisburg or Mechanicsburg.
