Written Directions

St Rt 278 is a fairly small road in Southeastern Ohio. It is an interconnecting route between St Rt 50 and St Rt 56. Suggested starting point would be either of these two intersections, but I would suggest starting around Lake Hope State Park and traveling north towards Nelsonville, Ohio.

Scenery

No big vistas along the main route (there are some killer ones on the gravel back roads), but the cool forests and large rock outcroppings are inspiring enough. Its truly a zen ride at times.

Drive Enjoyment

Just paved! (Summer of 2010)

Tourism Opportunities

Gas up early, you won't find a restaurant or gas station anywhere along the route. I suggest Nelsonville on the north side, or McArthur on the south for fuel or food.

Motorcycle Road Additional info

I grew up and still live right by Lake Hope. I literally learnt to ride a motorcycle on this route.

In my opinion a very overlooked road in the state of Ohio. It's even out near the coveted 555, but still doesn't get much love. That's fine, just less traffic for the people that know about it. This road has a little bit of everything. The twisties sweepers, the scenery, the greenery oh, and it's not too far out from civilization that you feel isolated.

Pretty good ride. Actually starts at state route 595 and goes to state route 50. I live in Nelsonville and pretty much learned how to ride on this road. It has some tight turns and some nice rollers. It's a go to ride if I know I don't have much time. Lake Hope is a good looking lake and their lodge is beutiful (also really good food). Great views from the lodge but no great Vistas while on the road.

The author is correct - this is one of the best motorcycle roads in the state! I have been on this two or three times. Halfway between Nelsonville and Mt Hope State Park is the best, as you ride on top of some nice ridges with excellent scenery.
