From I-84, take the Fishkill NY exit to route 9 south until you get to the intersection of Route 301 - this is where the route starts. From there just take Rt 301 east all the way till you reach Route 52 in Carmel, NY. Prepare to be wowed!
Woods, rivers, streams, bridges...it's all here. You'll pass right next to Canopus Lake and Boyd Corners Reservoir, cross a bridge over West Branch reservoir, and pass by Lake Gleneida. You will find yourself shaking your head at the beauty you will see on this short but sweet road.
Smooth and fast, a couple hiccups here and there with potholes but those are minimal. Good curves that open up to some incredible scenery.
The entire stretch is pretty spartan, which is a good thing, not a lot of distraction. The road is sandwiched by a couple of towns where you can load up/fuel up before you get to it. It also passes through Clarence Fahnestock Memorial state park.
Motorcycle Road Additional info
You should see a lot of fellow bikers on this road, which is always a good sign. Occasionally a slow moving mini-van will occlude your route, but then just throttle back and take in the majestic scenery.
I discovered this route unexpectedly and I just registered to this website to include it on my own... but was already created. This is a hidden gem! nice route

This is a beautiful ride, as described. Lots of great scenery. Reservoirs, parks, forests. Nice winding roads. Some rough spots on the road, but not enough to really detract from the ride. Watch your speed, though, lot of small town sheriffs patrolling the area. One attraction not listed previously is the Chuang Yen Monastery. It is open to the public and definitely worth a stop. It's just east of Canopus Beach on the way to Carmel. Look for the small white Buddha statue at the driveway. Then go onto the grounds to see the largest indoor Buddha statue in the Western Hemisphere. On the weekends you can also get brunch there.
