Get yourself to Lacrescent, MN (Just outside of La Crosse) and take US 61 North all the way up as it hugs the Mississippi River and takes you into Red Wing, MN. For an awesome return trip, just cross the river into Wisconsin and head south along Wisconsin 35 (the Great River Road) as it hugs the river on the east side ... you're really going to enjoy this trip!!!
Scenery
Ride along the Mississippi River - most beautiful scenery I've ever seen, been to 28 states, nothing like it !!!
Drive Enjoyment
The roads are good quality and have a nice amount of turns as they follow the path of the Mississippi.
Tourism Opportunities
Not really too much to do here but there are place to get gas and food.

Watch for deer on this ride - my wife and I went down after hitting a large one on the 35 side of this trip in Buffalo County, WI - 10:30 am at the end of June! The blankety-blank DNR departments of Iowa, Wi, and MN [possibly others] need to either cut the populations of these critters down or be shot!

Right now they are working on 61 between Winona and Wabasha. If you take this trip in the fall make sure to stop for a good apple just outside of Lake City. Also the Wisconsin side has many interesting side trip roads. Get some county maps and travel some of the less traveled roads for some great scenery!

I really enjoy the river rides, nice sweeping curves, roads are well maintained. I do beleive the view of the River is better on the Wisconsin side.
