Written Directions
This ride begins in South Lake Tahoe at US Rt. 50 and State Rt. 89. Head northwest on 89 along the west side of Lake Tahoe. Continuing on down the west side to Tahoe City where you can pick up State Rt. 28 to Kings Beach. You can continue along around the lake back to 89 and 50 staying on 28 to near Glenbrook then back on 50 south to the starting point.
Scenery
The first few miles you ascend up the steep twisting climb to Emerald Bay where you can pull off for a stunning view of the bay and the castle down the cliff. The rest of the ride is through the forested west side of the lake and great views of the lake and the houses that most of us can't afford.
Drive Enjoyment
The first steep climb is the best. It's not very long but has sharp hairpin and switchback turns to keep you on your best behavior. It's just as much fun going up as it is down. It's also a favorite spot for cyclists who have no problem using as much of the road as they need, so be careful of them.
Tourism Opportunities
There are many places to stop and gas up in South Tahoe before you haed out. Once you get to Tahoe City there's a little joint on the lake to stop for a cold drink and lunch. If you continue around the lake you can stop in Incline, CA. where they held the Olympics in 1960. From there you'll head back to east side of the lake where it gets busier the closer you get to South Tahoe. There are many casinos when you get to Stateline, NV. if you feel lucky.
