Written Directions

Get yourself to the starting point/town of Grafton, WV. From Grafton head east on US Highway 50 through the most western tip of Maryland and continuing on to the small WV town of Mount Storm (where Highway 50 and WV Route 42 intersect). .

Scenery

Mountains, Rivers, Valleys, Great People, Fun things to do. You travel just north of the northern most reaches of the beautiful Monongahela National Forest!

rock formations seen along the way Road Quality: 4

Twist and turns, leading to places that have MORE twist and turns. Another nice thing about this run is when you complete it, you are close to another couple of great mountain runs in the area - Skyline Drive and The Blue Ridge Parkway. You could get to them by continuing from this ride's end point (Mount Storm, WV) and get down to Front Royal, VA where you can start heading down (south) Skyline Drive to the end and then pick up The Blue Ridge Parkway in Afton, VA ... put this all together and this could be a fantastic weekend of motorcycle riding! windmills seen along the way

Roadside Amenities:3

This is a wild ride ... at one point has a near 180 degree turn with other tight turns leading to a funky gift story with rustic old knickknack shop about mid way through the run. You'll pass Cathedral State Park along the way too and could stop there as it's a nice midway point stop. I suggest you stay at Abrams Creek Camp ground - a great place to be ... just past the Highway 50 and WV Route 42 intersection (Near Mount Storm, WV). Look hard or you'll miss the sign. There is a lodge house, camping are, and cozy cabins to stay in all alongside Abrams Creek. This is a place off the beaten path and you'll have a blast staying over for the night.

Concur with the comment from TheNomadRider. 50 is a fun route, but the windmills pictured are actually on 219 (great ride!) and Seneca Rocks is a bit of a haul off the described route (Great ride down and back though!).

Update from West Virginia’s Road Ranger (July 31st, 2020): Route 50 is always of questionable pavement. Take care. For instance, just East of Fellowsville and west of the Cool Springs Park Exxon the pavement can have some discombobulating ripples in the road. Even after they repave the ripples come back a year or two later, other then that it’s poor to fair out to Maryland, as of June 2020.

This was a great ride with plenty of twisties, switchbacks and smooth roads. I commend the folks in WV for their upkeep of the pavement, making it a joy to ride these roads. We stopped at The Millstone BBQ for some fabulous "Hog Wings" and Banana Pudding for dessert somewhere in the middle of the ride on Hgwy 50. It was a great place to get off. They are only open certain days and seasons so check before getting your hopes up. Great scenery along this route as well as a good campground should you choose to spend the night. (Abrams Family Campground)

Hwy 50 is one of the better roads in the east. As pointed out Seneca Rocks are located elsewhere in beautiful West 'By GOD' Virginia. The wind mills are now found in several different spots. We spent 3 days trying to see all and fell short. Definitely worth a return trip.
