Written Directions

From Marquette take McClellan Ave South; this becomes C.R 553. You will drive past the ski hill and eventually come to a stop sign at the crossroads. From The Crossroads (where County Road 553 and County Road 480 meet) take a right on C.R. 480 heading West towards Palmer. Then turn left (South) on M-35 at the stop sign. Drive through Palmer; stop at the waterfall at the south edge of town if you wish. When you leave Palmer, the best part of the route awaits you; nothing but smooth, twisty, hilly, open road. Twenty miles later, drive through the town of Gwinn. On the East side of Gwinn take C.R 553 North back towards Marquette; (turn just before the B.P gas station on the east side of town). The first stop sign you reach is The Crossroads; go straight (north) to head back to Marquette or turn left (west) to do the loop again.

Scenery

Best part of the route is between Palmer and Gwinn on M-35; Great wilderness scenery; a waterfall you can view from your bike seat at Palmer; fun twisty hilly road without a lot of traffic. You can see part of the Empire iron-ore mine near Palmer.

Drive Enjoyment

Smooth road; M-35 section very curvy and hilly.

Tourism Opportunities

There's a few restaurants along the way; a couple of DNR campgrounds. Palmer and Gwinn are both pretty small towns; Gwinn being twice the size of Palmer.

One of the better roads here in the U.P. Make sure to stop by the UP North Lodge in Gwinn and the Full Throttle Bar and Grill in Little Lake. Both on M-35 with great food and cold drinks
