Written Directions

The starting point is easy to find - just find exit 24 off of interstate 81 (which is north of Abingdon, VA at Meadowview, VA). At this exit you will be on route 80 (take 80 north) and be able to take that all the way through Honaker, VA and on to the end of the route at the Kentucky state line. Here you can visit "Breaks Interstate Park."

Scenery

You'll see incredible scenery that includes mountains, rivers, old buildings, historic landmarks and end up at beautiful Breaks Interstate Park inside of the Jefferson National Forest.

Drive Enjoyment

Endless twists, turns, hills some flat and straight for resting. The roads are old country roads that include both rough and smooth sections. In my opinion, better than the dragon.

Tourism Opportunities

There are rest areas in small towns but the real thing to see is Breaks Interstate Park as its the main tourist attraction in the area.

This is on of the best day rides in the area. Hyters Gap is the bomb, but I would not recommend it for beginners. It can be a challenge if you have not crossed it before. There is so many scenic areas on this ride it is well worth taking. Go inside the Breaks Park also, and take some of the trails, you won't be disappointed.

I live about 30 miles from this road and have ridden it for years. The best part of the ride is from Hayters Gap (10 miles from I-81) to where it joins Rt 19. It is over one mountain with many severe curves that makes the Dragon seem like a wimp road. Very little traffic and no guard rails. You should ride with someone because if you go over the side of the road, it might be days before you are found.

This road has tons of turns from I 81 all the way to 19. Very tight turns in places along with a somewhat narrow roadway. I wouldn't recommend it for beginners though. At least not on big touring rigs. It can be a bit un-nerving at times. Be watchful for cars coming at you, usualy they are traveling quite fast.
