Written Directions

To start this route, you need to get to Swatara State Park which is about 20 miles north east of Harrisburg, PA. In Swatara State Park, you'll find Gold Mine Road which you want to get on and head north into Tower City. Follow Gold Mine road to the stop sign at intersection of route 325. Take a right on 325 (head east) into Tower City and when 325 intersects Route 209 take a right on to Route 209 (head east). Go to the top of the big hill and continue on slowly to Main Street. Take a left on to Main Street. At the stop sign check out the albino deer at the house on the right. At the same stop sign go straight through and you will be on Route 125. Take Route all the way up to Shamokin - the end point. From there you can go left on Route 61 North and this will take you to Shamokin Dam.

Scenery

This is a very scenic ride with views of the valleys from mountaintops. It also travels through the open valleys and farmlands. This is an exceptional ride in the fall when the leaves are turning color.

Drive Enjoyment

This is an excellent ride for those of you that like the challenge of a hilly, twisty road. The road is in good condition and has several switchbacks.

Tourism Opportunities

This ride is through the mountains so there is only one town on the ride, which is Tower City. Food and gas is available there. For a good meal after arriving at Shamokin continue north on route 61 to Shamokin Dam. Yes, these are two different towns with similar names. There you will find many restaurants and stores. My favorite is Skeeter's BBQ, located on top of the hill at the "Y" intersection of routes 15 and 11.

While this route was overall amazing towards. Pay close attention to a particular 3 mile stretch. When you come up to a sign in the road that says your 9 miles from Shamokin and make that left, the next 3 mile stretch is very dangerous especially when going down hill on a 1 mile or so stretch. I noticed my brothers rear tire throwing lots of stones, but looking at the road you would never realize that there is an UNREAL amount of gravel. It literally blended perfectly with the road..AND It WAS EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!...we got off the bikes and walked about a 50 yard stretch and realized the whole road was covered with a coat of top gravel... IT WAS BAD and I've been riding for 17 years and have never seen stuff like this. TAKE CAUTION im telling you!!!1

In the past 3 years, I have done this ride from Ft. Indiantown Gap military Army base, up Gold Mine Road to Tower City and then up 125 to Shamokin. Not a road for the beginner. There are a few switchbacks that will challenge you. Good mountain climbs and "S" turns. Twisties that tempt you to "grip and rip" in a good way. The first two times up and back, you can overdrive your bike if not careful. So, ease into the ride until you get familiar with the road. Probably the best road to test your alertness, leaning skills and braking. Simply loved it.

In Shamokin Dam at Just South of the Rt15 / Rt 11 Split is an Econo Lodge. In the lodge is Villa Sanchez. Best authentic Mexican food I have ever had outside of Mexico, and you can't beat the reasonable price or great service. A favored stop when in that area!!
