Written Directions

Start in Fletcher, NC and head west on Cane Creek Road. Take a right on to Mills Gap Road and take another right on Hoopers Creek Road and take that as it winds its way east and puts you in the town of Goodluck, NC. Then take a right on to Terrys Gap Road and take that southeast until it runs into Hwy 64. Left on Hwy 64 (chimney Rock Road) and take that till you intersect with Alt 74 which you want to take a right on to Alt 74. This will take you along Chimney Rock State Park (you can enter the park off this road and straight towards Lake Lure.

Scenery

This is a gorgeous ride through the country on gorgeous mountain roads, flanked by running water and ending at beautiful Lake Lure. Around every bend is another piece of landscape that just makes you stop and take pause. As you get nearer to downtown Chimney Rock, you are flanked on right by a roaring river and beautiful rock formations. Chimney rock in and of itself is impressive and the downtown area has many offering for food, retail and even a Harley Davidson store. Continuing through downtown Chimney Rock, you snake around the beautiful Lake Lure. We ended at Larkins on the water. The food is very good, reasonably price, the service is a little slow, but what beats eating lunch on the water. There is also a great farm stand on that road during the summer season.

Drive Enjoyment

There were a lot of sweeping curves, but they were not intense curves. Road quality was good, very even. Many opportunities to stop.

Tourism Opportunities

Chimney Rock State Park and the charming downtown are a must see. The area between there and Lake Lure is also steeped in history. Catch a boat ride during warmer weather and continue on for a choice of restaurants.

This is a great ride. The shaded mountain back roads definitely make summer rides more enjoyable. I live just off Terry's Gap and love the fall colors. The ride gets a little slow once you make a right on 74. The speed limit drops down to 35 and then 20 in downtown Lake Lure. I prefer taking a left at the end of 64 headed to Gerton. Stay on 74 to Fairview, or take the first right from 74 to highway 9 to and find yourself in Black Mountain.

Great road, sweeping curves, plenty of places to stop along the route, food on both ends, gas on the Hendersonville end, no gas station in Lake Lure now except for Ingles on NC 9 South.
