Written Directions

Start in Boonville NY. Coming either north or south on RT. 12, you will turn off onto Moose River Rd. You will take that until it intersects with Rt. 28. Turn Left/North onto Rt. 28. Rt. 28 intersects with Rt. 30, turn left/north onto Rt. 30. Continue on Rt. 30 until it becomes Rt. 3 East. Follow this into Lake Placid. Signs are easy to find, and each road change is miles apart. It's a very low stress drive.

Scenery

Nothing but mountains, forest and lakes. Gorgeous drive through Adirondack park. Passes the Chain lakes, Eagle Bay, Old Forge, Blue Mountain Lake, Saranac Lake, and Lake Placid among others.

Drive Enjoyment

Awesome road with a ton of turns. It's very rare to go straight for more than 1/2 mile or so. Winds up and down and around lakes. The only reason it's not a great on the scale is that pavement quality can be less than perfect since they are mountain roads.

Tourism Opportunities

The road goes through a lot of mountain towns, many set up specifically for tourists. Old Forge, Saranac Lake, and Lake Placid are your bigger ones, with restaurants, hotels, shopping, etc. Camping and gas stations are spread throughout the park as well.

Been on this route many times, heading to Lake Placid one of my favorite places. The roads have been repaired and repaved over the last 5 years, and it's a great ride to a great place.

I've taken several trips to Lake Placid from Toronto over the years. For me it's a 6 hour run up the side of Lake Ontario to the Hill Island, NY border crossing. I head North before Watertown where the roads finally get interesting. A gradual evaluation climb and passing through numerous small towns & villages does make this short jaunt an enjoyable one.
Roads are mostly in good shape and are kept in good repair given the sometimes hard winter months of frost. There are few site seeing spots on the way however when you get to Lake Placid there are several twisting roads around White Face mountain. Water flows and road twisters are always entertaining on a hot July summers outing. I stay at the Swiss Inn. They are fairly priced and have small cottages in the back where you can have your machine close by.

Nice rural ride, pavement in great shape, wide turns, mostly forested, relaxing, long lines of sight, nothing challenging - just great fun. I'll go out of my way for this again.
