Written Directions

Route starts in either South Fork and heads north on CO Route 149 or starts in Gunnison and heads south on CO Route 149 to South Fork.

Scenery

Route 149 is one the most scenic roads I have ever been on. Scenery wise you have it all - stunning views of the mountains , a ride a long the banks of a river, and sections that ride next to beautiful rock walls. It is a must ride If your are in Colorado. And, you get different views depending if you are traveling South to North or North to south. I personally think the South to North Route is the better view!!

Drive Enjoyment

Lots of sweeping curves on this one and of course being a mountain drive you're going to be going up and down hills. This road has it all.

Tourism Opportunities

There really aren't "things to do along the way" but you do have gas in the towns of South Fork, Crede, Lake City, and Gunnison. Crede and Lake City old Mining towns ... not much else.

Roads need work on some of the passes. Lots of tar snakes and some pretty good cracks. Great scenery but won't go back till they resurface the road around Slumgullion pass.

Pretty nice road but the few towns you do pass through would be the highlights. I rode this on July 15th and drove through a hail storm (or was it large pea sized sleet)Not many places to shelter you if you needed it but a good winding road with pretty good views.

This is a must ride for any two wheeled enthusiast. There is everything from beautiful open straights to bike leaning twisties. The scenery is out of this world. The food in Lake City is pretty good and is fairly priced. Gas is also available in Lake City. I found the roads to be in good shape. One stretch of road near Rio Grande reservoir was being resurfaced, but the loose gravel was minimal. I gave this ride a 3 because I compare my rides in CO to Hwy 550 the million dollar highway and it is a solid 5.
