Written Directions

This route is very easy to find and follow. Start your route in the town of Ely, MN and simply head south on Hwy 1 all the way to the route's end point of Illgen City, MN.

Scenery

This is Northern Minnesota at its finest! Entire length of run is within the Superior National Forest. You'll see most of the best scenery at the end of the route once you reach the north shore of Lake Superior.

Drive Enjoyment

Smooth blacktop for entire run, good twisties ... just watch out for the autos and most corners are heavily wooded and no way to see what is ahead of you.

Tourism Opportunities

Nothing around ... just you and nature. For something to do just head south. Once you hit Illgen, you will slowly get back to civilization.

This road is great!! I took this as a detour to Duluth from Roseau a few weeks ago. The ride through the woods is great and the curves are like a mountain road. Best road in Minnesota by far.

We took this route on our 2008 Lake Superior Circle Tour. A slight bit out of the way of the Circle Tour if your coming from Wis. but it is well worth the detour! Not a lot of gear shifting, just a lot of bends and curves. It was by far the best winding road I have ever been on for that distance.
