Written Directions

AZ-78 starts in Three Way, AZ and goes to the New Mexico border where it changes to NM-78 and connects to US-180.

Scenery

This route connects US-191 in Arizona to US-180 in New Mexico going up and over parts of the San Francisco Mountains. On the Arizona side the road crosses the valley with pretty sparse vegetation but some nice rocky views. On the New Mexico side, the road winds down through the forest and eventually crosses the valley of gently rolling grassy areas with wide open views of the mountains.

Drive Enjoyment

On the Arizona side the road crosses the valley with some nice flat twisties and then has a series of steep switchbacks for about 3 miles. On the New Mexico side, the road winds down through the forest through a series of curves but not quite as sharp as the AZ side. The road is in great shape with little to no gravel and good surface.

Tourism Opportunities

Other than some places to camp, there are no amenities. This is wilderness - have a full tank of gas before you get to Three Way and a full belly. Some great views will have to satiate you. On the NM side, there are gas stations about 20-30 miles away to the north or south.

Very nice short cut from Silver City to Morenci. Take it as a nice easy day trip from Silver City motels, or use it as the first leg of your big loop on the Coronado. Coronado rides best from south to north in my opinion. Sun more at your back that way. Or use this route as the little loop, Silver City, Morenci including a portion of the Coronado, then return to Silver by way of the 70 and then the 90.
