Written Directions

The route is in southwestern Wisconsin and runs E/W along the Wisconsin River. The west end starts in Prairie du Chien where the Mississippi River intersects with the Wisconsin River along the border of Iowa/ WI. The east end is Sauk City just NNW of Madison. All you need to do is get to Prairie du Chien and head east on Route 60 the whole way to Sauk City. From there you could head Southeast into Madison.

Scenery

Parallels the Wisconsin River from Madison (Sauk city) to Prairie du Chien where the Mississippi River and the Wisconsin Rivers intersect. River on one arm and spacious river valley back dropped by foothills and bluffs. Visit Villa Louis, an 1800's villa and mansion on the Mississippi River right in Prairie du Chien.

Drive Enjoyment

The Road quality is excellent! Clean, and fresh pavement on about 50% of the 120 mile stretch. Alternating 5-7 mile sections of curves right along the river and straight sections inland a bit through towns. The curvies are pleasant and clean. Not too technical although there are several sections that tighten up a bit. The curvy runs can be tackled by modest riders and bikes at reasonable speeds pretty easily but step up the pace and you'll find the wide open super fast sweepers exhilarating...and there are plenty! smooth roads and little traffic make this a good chilled ride or great fast curve run. Lots of offshoots along the way...try one! 131N, 35 N to Lacrosse.

Tourism Opportunities

Not too much along the route. There is plenty of the basics...food, fuel, etc.. but its pretty rural. Taking the route eastward you end up in Madison WI. quite a nice destination for an overnight! Culture, arts, University, Great hotels and dining...with a warm atmosphere.

Whether you are looking at the great sand bars of the Wisconsin River or the forests and bluffs of the hills, nearly evey mile of this route is beautiful. In mid July, the brighlty colored prairie flowers meet the shoulders of the road in perfect harmony. I highly recommend this route to anyone who wants to see the splendor of a Wisconsin summer on the back of a bike.

This was a very scenic route. My buddy and I came up from the southwest burbs of Chicago and went through Monroe, WI (recommend Baumgartner's for lunch and ask them to throw a dollar on the ceiling), and New Glarus, WI, (stopped at the brewery) to get to Sauk City. Highly recommend the Route 60 ride. Lots of twists and turns and scenic views. We dropped down into Dubuque, IA, for the night and casino offerings. Overall, good times. Thank you.

Deemed a scenic route by the state, it's a good ride. Plenty of curves as well as straight aways. Not overly busy -rode on a bright/balmy Saturday near end of May. Very few stops or slow downs. Smooth roads. Well worth riding more than once.

Not rated '5' simply because it is quite rural. If love rural, then it would probably rate a 5 for you.
