Written Directions

Just start in Silver City, NM and take NM 152 east all the way to Caballo, NM.

Scenery

This road is great continuous hairpins with rapid elevation changes, great scenery, camping, lot's of trees. Almost no police officers. This road is hard, you'll only average about 40 miles per hour going hard, lot's of knee skidding.

Drive Enjoyment

A solid 4-star rating because of all the twists, turns, and hairpins.

Tourism Opportunities

Don't take this route for the things to do along the way ... take it for the driving experience. There is not too much to do along the way except for camping. .

Amazing road. I used it as a way to get from the interstate 25 to Silver City. I was amazed by what I enountered. I rode the Coronado Trail the next day and NM 152 is just as fun, if not more technical. Thia road is fun at the speed limit or less. Watch for any rocks on the road and look out for the cattle guards in corners or at the exit of a corner. Usually not an issue but could cause an issue if leaned over to far. Watch for cattle napping by the road as well.

I rode this on Sunday (05-11-2020) and it was a blast. I went up the mountain on the dirt road, and down the paved side. I would not recommend this route for anyone w/o a dirt capable bike, as the trip on the north end (US 165) is all dirt and very rough. Not what I would recommend on a goldwing. Great on a BMWF800GS though.

Rode down from Santa Fe and cut across on 152 down to I-10 on our way to Phoenix. I gotta say, this stretch of road is one of the best kept secrets in the entire US. We never expected to see such beautiful mountainous terrain! In what had been up to that point on our ride nothing more than barren desert, we were extremely suprised with how this remote section of the state had eluded publicity. I had never seen anything as crazy as cows, YES I said COWS walking up the middle of the road like they hadn't a care in the world. Deer were popping out all over the place so keep your head up and stay at a safe pace to allow for quick braking just in case one decides to jump in your path. We stayed the night in Silver City and continued the next morning on Route 90 down to Lordsburg which was a very nice stretch of road as well. From there we hit the I-10 to Phoenix. Definitely want to make it back to ride this area again someday. 4 1/2 stars for sure...the only reason I can't give it 5 stars is because no roadside amenities and the actual road surface is very coarse...not the smoothest surface by far but all the turns and scenery make it worth while.
