Written DirectionsStartng out Ft. Scott, Kansas, I find Kansas 7 North. This is agriculture country, so know that farmers and farm equipment are present. As you go north, you will go through towns such as Mound City, Oskaloosa, Paola, ending in Olathe. As I get to Oskaloosa, Kansas 7 joins Hwy 169 North. You can take this, or go straight as I did. This is "Old Kansas City Road." You will drive by the old Midway Drive-in Theater between Oskaloosa and Paola. Head theough Paola, past the old town square, and continue north to Hillsdale. Old Kansas City Road will end to the west of Spring Hill, Kansas.
SceneryThis road leads you through beautiful hills and valleys of the small rivers and creeks of eastern Kansas. This is the eastern edge of the Flint Hills. Hills can be steep in places. As you crest someof the hills, you can see across the valley below for a couple of miles.
Drive EnjoymentThe road has its share of curves, many of them blind at the top of hills, so speed needs to be checked. There are portions of the road that offer twists and turns.
Tourism OpportunitiesWith a full tank of gas coming out of Ft. Scott, there should be no problem to complete the trip. There are stations in Mound City, Oskaloosa and Paola if necessary. BBQ and steakhouses resturaunts are along the way. Stop at Emery Steakhouse on the town square in Paola, great tenderloin sandwich. In Hillsdale, stop at the Hillsdale Bank BBQ. They are only open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during the summer. In Spring Hill, there is K&M BBQ.
