Written Directions

Very easy to find and follow this ride. Starting in Duluth (a destination in itself!) and just take US Highway 61 (north) till you get to the US/Canadian border.

Scenery

Ocean-like views of the "Big Lake", open up from the heavily forested Saw-Tooth Mountains that run along side the shoreline! Work your way up along the spectacular North Shore shoreline, past numerous rivers and waterfalls, state parks and the Superior National Forest! Fantastic!! Too much to detail in this limited space, so suffice it to say this run will blow your doors off (if you had them :-)!! End at the Canadian border! . Lutsen Lodge

Drive Enjoyment

US Highway 61 all the way! The road is in good shape, mostly straight with some gentle curves. Grand Marias Bay

Tourism Opportunities

You name it - high-end Lodges (Lutsen), to mompop cabins! Fancy restaurants, to small eateries! Can be chilly next to the Lake, so be prepared. And, there are SIX state parks along the way - yes SIX!

1) Split Rock Lighthouse State Park

2) Tettegouche State Park

3) George H Crosby Manitou State Park

4) Cross River State Wayside State Park

5) Cascade River State Park

6) Judge CR Magney State Park

Caribou River

Make sure to stop in at Lutsen Lodge (beautiful Northwood's Lodge), and take a run up Lutsen Mountain to enjoy lunch and a beer at Papa Charlie's (fun restaurant and bar, with spectacular views and live music)!

Nice road and the scenery was certainly beautiful. The air is crisp and the Lake is breathtaking. Did the ride at the end of May and about froze my fingers off.

1) Take note to shift over onto Old 61 at north end of Duluth for the shoreline drive ... not the divided highway to Two Harbors. 2) Notice that the Gunflint is an absolute dead end in the wilderness, but that Hwy 1 to Ely lets you loop elsewhere if you wish. 3) Also check the parkways along the hilltops of Duluth for great views of the city and lake.
