Written Directions

From Coeur d'Alene, ID at I-90, head north on Hwy 95 turn right on Prairie Rd (East) passing the light at Government way to the 4 way stop at N.4th st. Turn left and stay to the right (this becomes honeysuckle ave.) the road narrows a bit, take the 1st right on S. Hayden Lake Dr. (between the wire fence crossing the meadow) From here just stay on the main road all around the lake. You will come out on Lancaster Rd which will take you back to Hwy 95. There are many side roads that are paved and fun to explore, just be sure you have plenty of gas - cell service is minimal. Sections of this road are at a higher altitude and shaded; therefore, ice and snow maybe found early or late in the season.

Scenery

This is a narrow twisting mountain road that circles Hayden Lake. This is a nice short cool ride on a hot day with nice views of the lake, country homes and forest lands.

Drive Enjoyment

This road is fairly technical as it offers a variety of tight turns and hills. I would rate the road surface as 2.5 out of 5. Weekdays offer very light traffic; however, weekends are often very busy. Use caution for gravel, oncoming vehicles and driveways.

Tourism Opportunities

There are no real amenities at this time around the lake, but it is just a few miles out of Coeur d'Alene (which is a world class tourism town!) . There is one Forest Service camp ground at the east end of the lake up in the hills. (Dirt rd.) At the Marina there was an excellent bar with 4 Star food, it's closed now but it appears they are rebuilding!

Note: this road is easier to ride starting at the south end of the Lake and you will be on the inside of the corners most of the way. For a bit more challenge start at the north end, just remember there are no guardrails and very little shoulder.

It is slow, like taking the skills test over a long stretch. Go clockwise and finish at the Boathouse Restaurant. Good Stop. Only peek-a-boo looks at the lake on the trip. Lots of gravel access roads to the pavement so watch it.

Very nice but short route. Plenty of elevation changes, tight turns. Plenty of lake views as you go around. Very enjoyable. Not for racing around though- it goes through a populated area (lakeside vacation homes) and not good visibility past turns. If you want a slower but enjoyable twisty ride this is a great one. be sure also to stop by the fruit stand at route 54 and 95 (just North of that intersection, on RTE 95 on left side if you are headed north) the man has amazing fruits and they are cheap! Plus he lets you "try" anything and everything for free!
