I've done this from Willows up 162 to 306 and it is a very pleasant, almost no traffic rural road meandering thru the foothills w/ pleasant scenery. The road is fairly fast until it doubles back and down thru Lodoga where the pavement quality goes down a bit as you come down the hill into Maxwell on I-5. Highly recommended ;o)

The road was very rough. There were too many pot holes and dips to carry any amount of speed, too bad bc the curves would otherwise be fun. I would recommend finding a different route to enjoy the day on.

There is much to love about this loop. If you believe that California is all overcrowded, this loop will disabuse you of that notion. It feels open and empty, and I find myself wondering if this was what California was like 100 years ago. The OP rode it in the spring, and that would be my recommendation too. Ride while the grass is still green, the wildflowers are in bloom, and it's not yet super hot, but go ride it. You'll be glad you did.
