This is an amazingly beautiful route. The first 40 miles of road follows a beautiful narrow canyon which tops out and proceeds down a wide glacial valley with ranch land along the sides. There is gas at a spot entering Gateway, but the resort is pretty much closed unless you want to go to the museum. The next 50 miles to Naturita are, as others have described, colorful walls of many shades of red and tan, while the route follows a small river. Be sure to stop at the scenic sites mentioned in signposts along the way--from Sew-em-up Mesa to the overlook of the Hanging Flume. Expect to pass other bikers as it's easily the most colorful route in the state, surely that I've ever been on. I suppose that's why I ride it twenty times each summer!

This route is BEAUTIFUL and well worth any detour from your plan to take it in. From Whitewater to Gateway the scenery/rock formations are beautiful and guite different from the formations between Gateway and Naturita(my favorite stretch). It was a remarkable ride on my first visit, enough to repeat the ride a year later and stay at the resort in Gateway. Gas is available in Gateway and Naturita. The resort and auto museum in Gateway are well worth the stop. The museum offers discount admission to military(ret. & active). There are also a couple motorcycles in the museum. This and the Rio Grande headwaters(Rt 149 west of Gunnison to South Fork) ride are my favorite in the state. Another favorite is Durango-Silverton-Ouray-Ridgway-Telluride-Cortez-Durango loop. Another is Rt 92 over the dam(Curecanti National Rec area) at off Rt 50 North to Rt 133 to Carbondale, the part to Crawford reminds me of Alpine medows in Switzerland

This is one great ride. Very scenic ride through canyon with huge red sandstone (Navajo Sandstone) bluffs that will take your breath away and with views of the Dolores River along side of the road. Stop at the hanging viaduct overlook. Good place for food is the resort restaurant at Gateway. Also take time to tour the car museum at the resort. Resort and museum is owned by the owner of the Discovery Channel. Lots of curves between Gateway and Whitewater. You will like this ride.

Low traffic, smooth pavement and scenery galore. Listen to your engine scream echoing off the canyon walls. High speed sweepers with good sight lines. There are a few blind crests and cattle grates to be aware off, so don't over ride your abilities. Amenities are few, fill up in Naturita or Grand Junction. Gateway Resort is halfway along the route, check with locals to see if gas is available there (I don't recall)

Did this route today with my brother from North to South. Simply unbelievable. Was my second time after a 7 year gap and it's more mature and beautiful than I remember. Just do it.

Really fun ride with no traffic at all. Amazing views and I would say as beautiful as Sedona in many ways. Make sure to bring water. Many areas with no cell reception, feels like you are completely alone with the bike and road. Exactly what I love!

Beautiful highway though remote western Colorado along a slot canyon. The pavement is mostly good but had sections of raised area between the tire slots making me look pretty hard as I entered curves. There are sections that are breathtakingly beautiful, but also some long sections of good scenery, but not spectacular by Colorado standards. There aren't many amenities except the new Gateway Canyons Resort which as a restaurant that was very good. I will do this ride again, but takes some planning as it wouldn't be a day trip from the Front Range (Denver area). While there are portions of this ride that are a '5', out of 130 miles much of it pretty good but not the top rating.

I have to agree, on many points. I live in Tennessee but make an annual Mecca run to Colorado just about every year. 141 is ALWAYS on my list of favorite MC roads in CO. Lightly traveled, always and peaceful serene canyons, river, valleys, ranches. Make sure your tank is full, and stop at the Gateway Canyons gas stop to make sure you have enough to continue. (Discovery Channel Owner built up this area, huge ranch house on the left when heading south). At Naturita there is a junction with Hwy 90 which heads west to the LaSal mountains. Worth a little side trip up there if you have the time. 141 is the BEST way to get down to Durango in order to make a nice roundtrip back up through Silverton to Ouray on the Million Dollar Highway. But 141 is about as fun, quiet and challenging road you will find (other than Cache LaPoudre Hwy 14)

Words don't do this road justice. To me it is one of the best in western CO and it links up with UT 12 which is also a stunning road. When you are out there just make time to take in the scenery. Make sure to fuel up whenever you can as not all gas stations are open or even have gas.

I love this road and do it everytime I am anywhere near Colorado. It is lightly traveled and so very enjoyable. Lightly patrolled so even MORE enjoyable. plenty of good sweepers with a few twisties thrown in here and there. Fantastic views valleys, ridges, canyons. creeks rivers, rocks, passes and, well you name it. When at the north end to the Colorado National Monument. When you ride through Gateway stop at the little gas stop and fill up again, becuase its another 50 miles to the next one. Gateway is the home of the founder of the Discovery Channel and his huge ranch. His resort has a car collection in the main building if you stop in there. Once you get to Placerville you have a choice to go visit the wondeful town of Telluride (do it!, Just do it!). it is dead end drive but worth it. Otherwise turn left and head up to Ridgeway so that you can go south on highway 550 the Million Dollar Highway aka the San Juan Skyway, through Ouray to Silverton/Durango. The best riding in Colorado. Seriously.

My favorite road to date. Very low traffic and amazing views, especially between Gateway and Norwood. Canyons with huge rock faces and lots of twisties. Plenty of places to stop and take a rest. I stopped at one point for over 10 minutes and not one vehicle came by. Beware of squirrels everywhere in the woods popping out!

I cannot rate this ride highly enough. Speedy bits with twisty bits with amazing scenery and fantastic history. One of the great things about this ride is that you can cut off of it and find some amazing stuff....for example, heading west at Naturita up towards Utah and into Moab...or turning south at Telluride and doing the big loop that is the Number 1 ranked Colorado ride on this site.

Amazing Canyon ride. It is rated correctly in that the ride enjoyment is a 4 and the scenery is a 5. Can be a little hot. Well worth including on your way from the San Juan Mountain loop to Hotchkiss in preparation for the Black Canyon Run. I would rate it as #2 in the state.

Came upon this route without having previous knowledge of how beautiful it would be. High desert so in the mid-summer can be hot and dry. Bring water and I wore my hydration vest. Going back again to take my husband.
