Weekends and weekday afternoons will find Cades Cove loop road jammed up and jelly tight but sunrise is awesome with hundreds of deer and maybe a bear. Also check for special Cycle Only days.

This is one of my favorite roads in the area. I rode it from Townsend back to Gatlinburg a couple of times last summer. This road is just twisty enough to be fun but not so much so that you can't enjoy it.
The road follows a river for the part that I rode and you cross it a couple of times so regardless which direction you travel, you will be next to rock faces at times and next to the river at times. There are plenty of pull offs to stop and take pictures, wander around, or splash in the water if you want.
Make sure to pay attention to the speed limit in the park section near Gatlinburg. With no or limited traffic, this road can be a blast.

As per other reviews, Cades Cove is some of the most beautiful scenery you'll see in the Smoky's; however, be prepared to have your feet down and clutching continuously for 1-3 hours. If not for the heavy traffic would be a good cycle ride, but next time I ride it it will be on 4 wheels.

The ride from Gatlinburg to Townsend exit through the park is a great ride but my advice is to avoid the Cades Cove loop - unless you really like duckwalking your bike 11mi and cooking your engine and clutch. The valley is gorgous, don't get me wrong and from the comfort of an air conditioned cage its a pleasant waste of 3hr or more depending on how many deer there are to distract the tourists. I suggest a better use of your day would be to exit to Townsend, go through town and get on the Foothills Pkwy to 129.

My girl friend and I had a great time on this road. The original poster said there is nothing once you get on the road. Once you get toe Cades Cove Loop that is true. However there is a considerable distance from the park entrance to the Loop on Little Gorge Road, one can follow the signs to Townsend where there is a nice entrance. One nice part of the trip is places to pull off and lie by the creek in near private despite the road being close by. We took a nap and other things without being disturbed for about an hour. The day was as busy as I'd ever want to be on the road.

The roads were not the best but the scenery and animals were fantastic. It was a cool, drizzly day when we went, so many animals were out including a mother bear and her cub. If you want a slow, scenic ride with wildlife, don't miss this.

9/20/08 : Cades Cove Loop Road (11 miles) pavement is in terrible shape. Asphalt is rutted and potholed and is dangerous on two wheels. This is not just in particular spots but for the entire length of the loop.

Beautiful national park all the way around. Traffic can be heavy, even in the morning. Stops along the way to view nature (we saw mama and w cubs and another juvenile later in a tree) or park highlights. Just driving you get gorgeous sights whether it be creeks and rapids or meadows and forested mountains. We were there after the 2017 fires and didn't see too much damage in this area.

As stated by others Cades Cove has some beautiful scenery, pulloff's with picture opportunities of the local wildlife, very congested and slow moving. Far better ride in 4 wheels with an automatic that's for sure.

Not very scenic but a good place to see some bears. And don't go in the dead of summer a lot of cars and your bike might overheat.
