This route is simply world class! The scenery is incredible on both sides of the road .. on one side you have the mountains, cliffs, trees, & streams. On the other side you have the incredible black canyon diving down down down to the Gunnison River below. There are tons of turn outs for photos and taking your time taking in the scenery. My father and I took this as part of a father/son motorcycle trip in Oct of 2017 and the amazing scenery was even more amazing with all the fall colors ... the Aspens, Birch, and scrub Oak tries offered an incredible tapestry of fall yellows, golds, oranges, and maroons. If you ever wanted a classic shot of you on your bike riding through quintessential scenery this is the route ... just bring a friend and you'll have a thousand places to take some amazing pictures. And, I highly recommend you take your time on this one and stop at the pull outs and read the placards about the history of this canyon, the project to install the dam (that produces the incredible "Blue Mesa" to the east of the Canyon), and the geology that makes this area so captivating. Overall, we were so taken with the scenery and the great road conditions, curves and climbs, that even though we planned on doing this route just once and moving on to others in the area, we ended up doing it 4 times and had to skip many other roads we were going to try that day but when you find something this perfect, you just can't ride it once!!

great ride. I took a LT through the gravel for miles to ride the north edge of the canyon. The views are spectacular.
I did get caught out at sunset, which was beautiful, but there were LOTS of Mule Deer!! keep an eye out for them!!

It's the variety here that makes this route so great. I suggest starting in Hotchkiss so you're on the canyon side and easier to view down. One rides from fertile farmland/pasture to close-up forests of conifers, mountain mahogany, and aspen to sheer cliff views down into the dark igneous rock of the Black Canyon. The ten miles along the canyon are not for beginners due to the intimidation factor.

Rode this with a buddy in August '08. Beautiful scenery with plenty of places to pull off and look, long gentle curves and blacktop in great shape for the most part. Don't worry about the lack of ammenties, its not that long of a ride although getting there can take time too.

This was an amazing ride in Colorado. There are a lot of sheer drop offs with no guard rails but it is a veri exhilerating ride. Want to get down in the canyon you are engulfed by them. Amazing views an amazing ride.

Combined with Grand Mesa and Million Dollar Highway, it could well be the best ride in the U.S.

My son, his wife, and I rode this one windy, wet afternoon in June. It was part of a multi-day Colorado mountain loop ride that began and ended in Denver. The rain started in earnest at the Blue Mesa reservoir and stopped when we arrived in Crawford. The road was slick, and when the wind wasn't blowing the rain kept visibility down to white knuckle squinting. I can't remember when I've had this much adrenaline pumping fun!!!

We were lucky in the fact that there was no traffic either way, as some of the curves ended being a little wider turn radius than planned for (I may not have been riding "good lines" while keeping the bike upright. I agree that starting in Crawford would afford you better views as you won't have to turn against traffic in the blind curves. I'll do that next ride.

If you get the oppertunity, don't pass it up.

IF YOU CONINUE WEST OFRT 50 INSTEAD OF TAKING 92 THERE IS A RODE OFF TO YOUR RIGHT THAT TAKES YOU RIGHT TO THE CANYON, AND IT IS PAVED ALL THE WAY. THER IS ALSO A RODE THAT TAKES YOU DOWN TO THE BOTTOM OF THE CANYON. IT IS A 5 MILE PAVED ROAD WITH A 16% GRADE ALL THE WAY. GREAT RIDE. RODE THIS IN MID AUG 09

I agree. This road is very LIGHTLY traveled, every time I have been on it. Some fantastic views of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison can be found along the first 20 miles. The pavement is pretty good, although last year they were patching some potholes and not doing a great job. No amenities between Gunnison and Crawford, so full tank and pack a lunch/water. Nice an secluded and I have never seen it patrolled.

Good pavement, low traffic, and lots of curves. Scenery is pretty good, although I was there for the fun curves. If there are negatives, you can't see through many curves so a little caution is advised. This road is why I ride a motorcycle.

We rode this route by necessity. Hwy 50 closed for blasting just as we got there. The flag man told us we could wait there 4hrs for it to open back up or take the Hwy 92 Detour. He told us it was a great route especially on a motorcycle. This route should've been part of our route to begin with. All the way we had cliffs on our right and canyon on the left. This had plenty of twists and hairpins to keep you on your toes. Such a beautiful ride!

Riding with views of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is exceptional. One of Colorado's least attended park in my opinion. Lots of pull offs to take in all the sights and get some good photos. As per usual lots of deer.

I agree with it being the best motorcycle road for pure ride enjoyment in Colorado. Great scenery by most standards but it is in Colorado so has to compete with the San Juan Mountain run and Hwy 550 which is unbelievable. I thought when I saw the black canyon the ride was about over but the corners kept coming much to my delight. For my style of riding it was great. If you like to lean into it and punch it on out of the corners don't miss it. We did not have much traffic at all.

Another of my favorites when I am in Colorado. This rides along the north rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. This is NOT in the park and so no fees. Also no LEO's. pavement can have some rough spots. Nice twisties and switchbacks. Great views and scenery, both off in distance and down into canyon. Very LIGHTLY traveled. Good pull offs. you will have a blast and can pour the coals to it and have fun. Can't remember the posted speed limit, but that doesn't matter. Great for fun riding. Great for great views and scenery.

I rode this route over the July 4th week. What a great ride!
We rode out of Breckenridge down to Gunnision and returned via Hotckiss over Independence Pass. Round trip was over 400 miles but worth the ride!
