If you want to take this route from the south to the north, start the route by finding your way to Ducktown, TN (which is about 70 miles south of Knoxville, TN near the TN/GA border). From Ducktown, simply take TN route 68 north all the way to Telico Plains, TN.
Scenery
A pristine country setting with mountains and creeks in abundance. There are also some very small communities along the way.
Drive Enjoyment
This road is not for the novice biker. Good road condition and some very tight turns and lots of curves. Hwy 68 runs into Ducktown, TN to Tellico Plains, TN. From the south end of it you can route from the south to connect to the Cherohala skyway.
Tourism Opportunities
Nothing really to do other than just enjoy the scenery and the awesome road twists and turns. From either direction fill up with gas because it might be the only opportunity you get. This route passes through the Cherokee National Forest.
I enjoy this ride a lot, but have learned to be very cautious due to some hazardous road conditions. There are numerous gravel driveways that connect to the road, so you'll encounter a lot of gravel along the white lines. Also you need to be aware of the northernmost railroad crossing, if you hit it too fast it could launch you off your bike. Lastly there are areas that have had some poor road repair work done, the patches are very uneven and kinda sprawl across the lanes. Again, I do enjoy this road, it's a nice preamble to the Skyway, but it has some unfortunate characteristics that need to be accounted for.

My husband and I rode TP tp Ducktown for the first time in the spring 2009. Beautiful, but chilly. Rode again just a few weeks ago. This is a beautiful ride. We prefer the S to N ride because there is a nice restaurant in TP called Nut-N-Fancy. Always eat there, recommend the chicken salad sandwich and fried catfish! You can get to Ducktown from Cleveland, TN along Hwy 64E, along the Ocoee River (a beautiful ride in itself) to Ducktown. There you take 68N to Tellico Plains.
