Written Directions

Easy to find and follow. Just start in Williamsport, PA. Just south of town you'll find PA Route 44. Get on this and take it northwest up to Coudersport, PA.

Scenery

70 plus miles of secluded state forest - a nature lovers dream!

Drive Enjoyment

The condition of the tarmac varies greatly. Some spots need work so that's why I've given this road a 4 instead of 5. However, throughout the 120 miles you will encounter many tight turns, elevation changes and a few sweepers.

What you wont have to deal with is stop signs, traffic lights ... there are NONE!!! or traffic - this is one of THE BEST!!!

Tourism Opportunities

The secluded nature of this road has its down side - you better gas-up before entering and you should pack a lunch if want to eat something along the way.

Sep 08 Update from Brad Morgan - I would recommend that anyone taking PA44 should also do a quick side trip to the Hyner View Lookout - its a launch point for hang gliders and a place that offers a spectacular view! Take PA1014 "Hyner Road" for approx 4 miles to the Hyner View State Park entrance - turn left and go approx 3 miles to the lookout. Hyner road and the road to the lookout are an experience in and of themselves - well worth the trip - you wont be disappointed ! Bring your camera (see pictures below).

As noted by one other person on here. PA 144 is amazing also. You could easily do a figure 8 using these two road and Rt 6 on the northern portion and Rt 150 / Alt 220 on the south eastern portion to connect 44 and 144 for an amazing bunch of riding.

One of a few gems of north central Pennsylvania. While you're in the area try 144, as well. There are similar roads and they both have twisties, sweepers, up or down mountains, pretty much no amenities, and barring traffic and questionable road surface you should have quite a good time. If I had to pick between the two I would pick 144, but 44 is still a strong road.

Excellent road I have ridden it many times from Pleasant Gap, one of the best rides in Pa, but if you go off onto 414 up north expect a bumpy ride at least the last time I rode it, but the view on both roads is great. On 414 heading towards Wellsboro. 414 is like Dukes of Hazard towns and 44 is like going to camp but it all is on a paved road, real nice. (Jack Hoff) knows nothing about riding if he doesn't like this rd.
