Written Directions
On NM 4 take Forrest Road 36 south up the ridge. Cross the cattle guard on top of the ridge and follow the road to a T-intersection. Go right on the intersection following FR 36 which will turn into FR 289. FR 289 will cross a cattle guard into Bandelier National Monument and eventually merge onto Highway 4 again.
Scenery
The dirt roads is rough at the beginning climbing up Rabbit mountain ridge. From there A great view of Valles Caldera National Park is visible. Later the view to the South reveals Cotchitty lake and in the far distance Albuquerque.
Drive Enjoyment
The road is a medium challenging dirt road with some ruts, but mostly maintained gravel surface. Watch for traffic on the main FR 289.

Great scenery and wild picnic areas, as well as other Forrest roads and trails off the main road.
