Written Directions

Start at either entrance to the Colorado National Monument located between Grand Junction and Fruita, Colorado just southwest of Interstate 70. You can find it online at https://www.nps.gov/colm/index.htm

Scenery

Awesome landscape scenery! Red rock, sheer wall canyons along the twists and turns of Rim Rock Drive. You may see some wildlife like bighorn sheep and antelope. The evening sun makes the colors vivid and wild, so don't forget to take your camera. There are very nice picnic and camping areas also. Nice shelters with easy hiking trails.

Drive Enjoyment

The pavement was very good and well maintained. the twist and turns are many and the views are striking, so the going may be slow. We took about an hour and a half which included a quick picnic lunch.

Tourism Opportunities

Great picnic and camping areas and shelters. Very well maintained. Nice visitor center! The facilities are so nice that people have weddings there!

Motorcycle Road Additional info

I went in early October and there was virtually no traffic.

While you can travel this route either way, going from south to north puts you adjacent to all the pulloffs.

If you have time you can take some of the hikes off some of the parking areas. There is a visitor center and campground near the northern end of this upper mesa.

A side trip I like is to take the road to Glade Park (the first south headed road if you are traveling from the south entrance). This road will end up along a high mesa a few miles from the Utah border where you will turn around and come back. There are several arches along this road.

Great twisty ride, great scenery, strong climb at one end, steep descent at other end (does not matter which end you start at, east or west entrance). National Monument so there is a $10 fee or use your National Parks Pass. There may be some slow tourist traffic, and there is ALWAYS at least one Park Ranger in a truck monitoring speeds near the upper portions of the east portion.
