Written Directions

Northbound on 3rd Avenue in downtown Durango continue on Florida (Flor-eee-dah) road (CR240). Turn right at "Helens Store) which remains CR240. Left at the "T" onto 501, and on up to Lake Vallecito. Continue at least 10 miles past the bridge alongside the lake. Return by way of 501 all the way to Bayfield and 160W to Durango.

Scenery

A perfectly paved road through SW Colorado forests leading to a beautiful mountain lake. Doesn't get any better.

Drive Enjoyment

This road is maintained immaculately since all the County Commish's live up there!

Tourism Opportunities

The Vallecito Country Store has some excellent Mexican food including REAL shredded beef tacos. Several other restaurant choices at the lake, breakfast lunch & dinner.

Motorcycle Road Additional info

There is always AT LEAST one radar-equipped County Mounty or CHP unit somewhere along this route. Guaranteed. Keep you speed down to something safe.

As advertised.
Another option, especially if riding from Ignacio, is take CR 234 north from the hwy 160, 172 intersection to the T at CR 240.
This option starts off straight and unimpressive but quickly becomes twisty and remains so for most of its length.
