Written Directions

North from Lake Isabella head to Kernville. Take the road north on "Sierra Way"/Mountain Rd. 99. 7 miles past Johnsondale take the turn north to Western Divide Highway/CR-107 which is the Mighty 190. Follow this road all the way around to Springville and down the Porterville.

Scenery

From Lake Isabella it's rolling hills and beautiful. Once into Sequoia N.M. it gets extremely busy and tight in the trees. This is quite easily the most entertaining road I have ever been on. Huge, old trees, a few look-off on the descent.

Drive Enjoyment

Extremely twisty, huge elevation drop 7000' to the valley floor. Constant switchbacks, and twisties. I was actually looking for a break on the descent as it was so challenging on my big, loaded bike. Big drop offs, and big blind curves in the N.M. - gotta be on your toes.

This is a must ride if you're within 200 miles of this area!!!

Tourism Opportunities

Porterville and Lake Isabella are your only points to fill up. It's fairly remote.

If you like turns this is your ride. The Tail of the Dragon has nothing on this ride. The scenery is beautiful also when you have a chance to take your eyes off the road.

Great Ride! Highly recommend! Following the described route directions, the road surface leaving Lake Isbella can have some rough parts until you get to the 190. Lots of 2nd gear turns with some very narrow sections before you reach the 190 as well. However, the views are spectacular as you climb in elevation. Once on the 190, the road quality improves massively and the corners become more sweepers (60mph ). Around the Camp Nelson area, the road tightens up drastically! It's miles and miles and miles of 2nd gear switch backs with even some 1st gear thrown in. It will wear you out wonderfully! The views are fantastic all the way. The road stays a 2 lane road the entire way. Be careful on the south end of the 190 as it's a popular backpacker/day hiker spot. It's the mountains, so be aware of deer as well. This road is closed for winter. Elevation is high if your bike is carbureted.
