Did this route from Bakersfield this morning and enjoyed it very much. It was part of a ride that had me first go over Walker Pass/rte 78 by Lake Isabella so I can't say I was as impressed with the scenery as other have noted.
It's appeal may be that it's a fun and fast (due to no cars) way to get from Bakersfield to Pacific Coast Highway. You do have to watch out as many of the corners don't have suggested speed signs and if you're going by your GPS you'll come in way too hot at 55mph on many of the turns.
