I've done this route and I like it much better than the "Dragon". There were a lot less cars and bikes and the number of twisties are just as challenging. I started in Murphy, NC and went West on 74 to 68, then North to Tellico Plains TN. (But, on that route you can also take 294 from 74 and it will bring you to 68 for a taste of what's in store for the most challenging sections...) The from Tellico Plains, the Cherohala takes you back to to 129 (the Dragon) then south to 74 West and back into Murphy. If done right, there is plenty of time to stop for lunch in Tellico Plans, then head up to the "mile high" elevation marker at about three quarters of the way through Skyway and make it back to Murphy in around 5 hours.
