Written Directions

I always pick 72 south up off of 7 east out of Kingwood, WV. Take it all the way till it intersects with Route 32 54 miles later.

Scenery

For much of this road you're riding next to a creek with a pretty good view of it, when not next to the creek the elevation offers a fair view. Not too shabby...

Drive Enjoyment

Very good pavement just before or after Rowelsburg, I believe. Before then it's shoddy, but not horrible. North of Parsons it's great and south of 219 it's a 1.5 lane suicide (see: fun) road.

Tourism Opportunities

Parsons,WV is it. The other towns are too small to offer anything up.

Motorcycle Road Additional info

The faster you take this road, the more fun it is. Now, granted that can be said about anyone road, but seeing as the lanes get pretty fat at the mid and late part of this road allowing plenty of room for smooth sweeping turns. Do mind the red clay that falls down on the road in one spot on the right if heading south. You can't miss it, given that the hills are all trees until you get to the red hill part, then it goes back to trees.

In 2011 and earlier this road used to be a real crapped. They paved it in late 2011, I believe and ever since then it's been a mainstay on how I get deeper into West Virginia coming from south western PA. It's a great cruising road, but can be even more fun by adding some speed since the turns aren't anything too sharp. The view is great north of Parsons, as well. South of Parsons is a whole different animal, basically a paved 1.5 lane 25 - 40 mph road with no guard rails in many spots and a fair dose of gravel. I only take this south branch when I'm in the mood to do so, but I thoroughly recommend that you try it at least once. Just...be careful. It's a steep drop.

Update from West Virginia’s Road Ranger (July 31st, 2020): As of June 2020 it’s fresh asphalt from WV7 to WV50. South of Rowelsburg things are pretty lumpy, then it goes back to smooth for a few miles, the on the uphill, if going South, it gets pretty damned rutted and lumpy under some canopy after the yard full of satellite dishes. (You can’t miss them.) Then it’s smooth again all the way to Parsons. I have not yet been on the 1.5 lane part south of 219, yet. As usual, if you wish to know of possible construction check out www.wv511.org

Took 72 from Kingwood to US 50. It was absolutely beautiful. For most of the route you can see the Cheat River to your side which gives amazing views. The road quality wasn't the best but I slowed down to take advantage of the scenery so it wasn't a big deal.
