Written Directions

This route was taken as a side trip enroute to the New River Gorge. Elkins, the start point, is located between Interstate 79 and 81, near the north end of the Monongahela National Forest. Summerville is located on 19, west of Charleston. 72.5 miles from Elkins to Mill Point on 219 then another 63 miles along 39/55 to Summerville.

Scenery

You will start into the hills with numerous pull-offs to stop and admire the views. At the top is the Elk River Ski Resort at Salty Fork. The hills flatten out slightly as you turn east on 39/55 through the beautiful Monongahela National Forest toward Summerville.

Road Quality: 5

Seemed every corner was highly engineered new asphalt through along 219 past Valley Head. Many banked curves and switch backs 219. The road to Summerville too was great with fewer hills. Can't say enough about that section of 219. Corners engineered so steeply that the elevation change is quite noticeable. Total miles 126, about 3hrs 15 mins start to finish..

Roadside Amenities:: 3

Elkins and Summerville are both loaded with accommodation and places to eat. The short ride in between does not have a lot of things to do other than enjoy the scenery and ride!

Great route. 219/250 out of Elkins is a bit 'meh' until 250 breaks off and goes its own way. Then 219 eases up on traffic and things get twistier and twistier. Heading onto 39 in SpeedingTicketsville is a nice touch, and certainly a nice portion of that road. A great 'short cut' (see: long cut) from SpeedingTicketsville to Elkins.

This is a fantastic ride! Agree with Akumu, section where 250 and 219 run together is just so so, but rest of the ride is SWEET! Great pavement, plenty of twisties, what a fun ride! Great roads branch of every part of this route. We had a county route we'd take from Mill Creek/219 over to 20/West Virginia Wildlife Center, went thru Helvetia & Alexander. It was hot and this route was a nice, cool, shaded ride. 40 miles, road was a bit rough in places, and had gravel in a few turns, but all in all not too bad. We based in Buckhannon and rode it several times both ways, liked east to west better.
