Written Directions

Starting from Chewelah head east though downtown and follow the signs to 49 degrees north ski area; there is a stop light at this intersection. Starting from Usk is a little bit tricky as the ski area sign is quite small and the road is not well posted in 08. Heading north on hwy 20 watch for a little diner on your right at triangle rd; you will take the next paved rd to your left. Stay on the main road by veering right at the next cross road. If you start from Newport and take Le Cleric rd north, turn left at the 1st bridge, go straight and cross Hwy 20 onto Flowery trail rd. Stay on the main road by veering right at the next cross road. Note: to get this road to come up on Google maps - use directions: Chewelah, WA to Usk, WA, Otherwise it just doesn't show there is a road there. I'm sure this is why it's a road rarely traveled except by locals and skiers.

Scenery

"This road is my "amusement park rollercoaster" that I love to ride from east to west and turn around at the chain up area on the west side and ride back again. Maybe even several times if I have enough time that day. If you're not from this area, do note this road may have Ice well into May and as early as September. If you add this road to two other roads posted on this web site (Hwy 20 Tiger to Colville and Run Along the Pend Oreille) you will have a wonderful loop ride of great scenery and fun twisties." DeDe Flowery Trail Rd runs from Chewelah to Usk past the 49 degrees north ski area. The scenery is beautiful; a typical Inland Northwest mountain road. Lots of wild life may be seen. Great views to the west and east from both sides of the mountain pass.

Drive Enjoyment

This is an amazing twisty mountain road that was completely rebuilt around 2004 to accommodate the growing ski area. It has to be one of the best kept secret roads around as it doesn't just show up on web maps. It has great sweepers throughout and a few tight hairpins. From the west side you gain elevation very quickly and the turns are fairly tight. Once you reach the top of the pass, the east side opens up to a series of great sweepers as you wind down the canyon. It has a posted 25 mph coming out of Chewelah - do mind your speed as it can be a speed trap. Traffic is always light in the summer as this is a skier's road; many week days I never see anyone.

Tourism Opportunities

In Chewelah there are many services. NO services along this road, just solitude.

I live 30 minutes from Flowery Trail and you are correct, it ROCKS. To complete the ride, stay north on Hwy 395 to Hwy 25 north into Northport. On the north end of Northport, go east on Deep Lake Boundary Road. It skirts the Canadian Border and overlooks the Columbia River. It is a fantastic rides that the locals that is not to be missed. It loops around back to Hwy 395 at Colville.

The Flowery Trail Road is great but I rated it a 9 because of the low speed limits. Even though the locals abuse them greatly...

Wonderful ride in the summer on a warm, sunny day which was my experience. Excellent scenery and it was a good way to get from Colville over to Sandpoint, ID as well.
