Written Directions

Written directions: The road starts in Castle Rock (exit 49 off I-5). From there just take Route 504 - "Spirit Lake Highway" east and up into the end point at the Johnston Ridge observatory.

Scenery

If you like rides that give you views of lakes & rivers, this will be a great ride for you as you'll see Silver Lake, Coldwater Lake, Spirit Lake, a few rivers. And to top it all off, amazing views of Mt. St. Helens and the destruction it caused from the Johnston Ridge Observatory.

Drive Enjoyment

If you like sweepers this is the place for you. Miles and miles of sweepers on nearly perfect road surface. The last little stretch up to the observatory has some tighter turns too.

Tourism Opportunities

You'll have access to a few places involving Mt. St. Helens and there are restaurants back in the town of Castle Rock, WA.

I came on a cool clear day, so the traffic was light and I had a great ride and a spectacular view. Remember to get you yearly park pass.

This is a great ride. Road surface is great! Beautiful scenery with many areas for checking out the vistas. Nice sweeping turns and high bridges with great views. Some of the best grub around can be found at the Fire Mountain Grill at 19 Mile House. Make a day trip to the observatory, at the Fire Mountain Grill for lunch, and head back home. A perfect day.

I frequently work at Mount St. Helens and have driven/ridden this road about 10 times each year. Great ride with amazing scenery on a nice day. Smooth asphalt, great sweepers, and no speed traps up valley. This route can be difficult in inclement weather (summer wind, winter frost/snow), especially around Elk Rock and the end at JRO. Take the time to stop at each overlook to take in the volcanic landscape. Bathrooms at Coldwater Lake and JRO.
