Written Directions

Just north of Portland, OR and across the Washington border is the town of Vancouver, WA. Start in Vancouver and find State Route 14. You can find 14 by either taking exit 1B off of I-5 or by taking exit 27 off of I-205. Once you get on SR-14 take it eastbound where the route basically starts as you come up to Camas, WA. After the road winds through Camas, and Washougal, you enter the Historic preserve area. This is where the scenery begins. The best place to turn around is Skamania lodge (just past the Bridge of the Gods).Note: If you find yourself hurting for time, and want to return to Portland quicker, take the Bridge of the Gods across the river into Oregon (toll is $.50 for bikes) and hit I-84 westbound.

Scenery

Beautiful scenery abounds throughout on this road with lots of variety. Expect lots of forests, spectacular views of the Columbia river, especially at Cape Horn (pull over for this one), farmland, tunnels... the list goes on and one. A must ride!

Drive Enjoyment

Road has a variety of twisties, straights, peaks and valleys. Best ridden on the weekend when there are no logging trucks to slow you down. Roads are paved, and in excellent condition.

Tourism Opportunities

Must sees are Cape Horn, Bonneville Dam, Bridge of the Gods, and Skamania Lodge. There are a couple of small restaurants in Carson, but the ultimate is the Sunday brunch at Skamania Lodge. Make reservations, it fills up fast.

This was a pretty sweet and easy ride. I took 14 all the way the the hood river bridge and then took 84 west and got off on the first exit for the scenic highway 30. I took that into Troutdale and then too Marine Drive back into NE Portland. great day ride!

If you live in Portland or Vancouver, this is a great road for an after work decompression, or just a excuse to get a burger somewhere other then the local joint.

Except for the fact that Cape Horn is off of Hwy 4, between Longview and Illwaco - west of I-5, the information is good. Hwy 4 and Hwy 14 in WA, and US 30 in OR, from Astoria to Biggs Junction, are all great motorcycling roads
