Written Directions

Leaving Canton on Hwy 64, it is easy to veer left ont FM 279 just before Ben Wheeler. Hwy 64 is two lanes and moderately busy. i suggest finding an alternate route to Ben Wheeler.

Scenery

On a whim, we left the planned route and took FM 279. The road is hidden under a canopy of trees and has many turns to keep it interesting. We road it during October, we saw the beginning of fall color and elm leaves danced lightly on the breeze.

Drive Enjoyment

FM 279 had a pleasing assortment of curves and twisties, but nothing too complicated. For east Texas, there was quite a bit of terrain. FM 279 is two lanes and had very light traffic the day we road. The road was in very good condition. I suggest it for intermediate and advanced riders.

Tourism Opportunities

Choose this route for the drive, not the amenities. Edom is a tiny town which merits a stop if you like that kind of thing. We were enjoying the drive and did not stop.

I live just off 279. The Shed Cafe in Edom is a very popular destination ride. A lot of groups come over from the Dallas area.

A nice little side trip off of Hwy 84. The Shed in Edom is a great place to eat. But they are always full between noon and 2 pm.
