Written Directions

Easy to find and follow. Just start in Williamsport, PA. Just south of town you'll find PA Route 44. Get on this and take it northwest up to Coudersport, PA.

Scenery

70 plus miles of secluded state forest - a nature lovers dream!

Drive Enjoyment

The condition of the tarmac varies greatly. Some spots need work so that's why I've given this road a 4 instead of 5. However, throughout the 120 miles you will encounter many tight turns, elevation changes and a few sweepers.

What you wont have to deal with is stop signs, traffic lights ... there are NONE!!! or traffic - this is one of THE BEST!!!

Tourism Opportunities

The secluded nature of this road has its down side - you better gas-up before entering and you should pack a lunch if want to eat something along the way.

Sep 08 Update from Brad Morgan - I would recommend that anyone taking PA44 should also do a quick side trip to the Hyner View Lookout - its a launch point for hang gliders and a place that offers a spectacular view! Take PA1014 "Hyner Road" for approx 4 miles to the Hyner View State Park entrance - turn left and go approx 3 miles to the lookout. Hyner road and the road to the lookout are an experience in and of themselves - well worth the trip - you wont be disappointed ! Bring your camera (see pictures below).

Took this road in June, 2014. The scenery is beautiful, but there are some blind turns that made me happy I had the GPS to see ahead and avoid over speeding into the corners. With a sport bike it would be fun and exciting, but with my beast it meant slowing down.

Be careful on the last few miles coming into Coudersport. The cops want to balance the budget. Got a ticket for 50 in a 45 zone.

Rode Route 44 this July 4th weekend. I have a difficult time giving it a 3 star rating because there are areas of the roadway that are terrible, read the user rating from Sept.2013 and I don't know what happened since them but the sister section of 144/44 north to route 6 at sweden valley are aweful with holes, cracks, bumps, terrible patches, tar snakes etc! PA needs to get their act together up in this area, it could be a meca for motorcycling and a BOOM for the businesses in the area by drawing in the motorcycle riders looking to get away! Don't get me wrong, there are some great roads between Coudersport and Mansfield but they could do better!
