Written Directions

Start route in Gardiner, M and head north on US 89 ... ends in Livingston, MT.

Scenery

Great mountain scenery through Paradise Valley along Yellowstone River. You'll see Pronghorn sheep, eagles, mule deer, bears (maybe). This route runs thru Absaroka mountains. For some special scenery divert onto E. River Road which returns to 89 after 15 miles or so.

Drive Enjoyment

Sweeping curves south give way to a flatter, straighter ride in the north. Pavement is great.

Tourism Opportunities

Good food in Gardiner and Livingstone. Gardiner is expensive as it is a gateway town to Yellowstone NP. Emigrant has a good bar/restaurant and a store w/ gas. Check out Chico Hot Springs and the Shining Gallery in Pray. A couple of National forest campgrounds on the east side near Gardiner and Pray. My daughter and I stayed in an awesome cabin renter to us by Gary and Vicky from the Shining Gallery in Pray, MT. Just a quick plug here as they were wonderful hosts.

Rode this ride from Gardiner north after sunset on Sept.15, 2008. And south from Livingston on a beautiful day, August 1, 2009. It is a very nice ride but I don't recommend doing it at night. The route along the river becomes a deers playground after dark.

This ride is like so many in Montana, long stretches of road and wide open spaces with mountains in the distances and several rivers and streams around you. If you're coming from Yellowstone towards Livingston, Livingston is a good stopping point, lots there to do but, not much in between, it's pretty empty in this stretch as far as town with amenities. This was near the end of my ride coming from Red Lodge MT, over the Beartooth and into the northern part of Yellowstone before reaching this stretch out of Gardener.

Rode it from Livingston south into Gardiner and into Yellowstone. The section along the river is wonderful!
