Written Directions

From Libertytown, MD take route 550 north west up to Sabillasville, MD. Continue on 550 as it turns a corner and starts heading southwest and then joins up and merges with route 491 south. Take 491 southwest down to Smithsburg, MD. Next take a left on to route 77 and head southeast thru Thurmont and on to Detour. Continue as route 77 becomes Middleburg Road and pass through Feeserburg and then take a right on to Union Bridge Road and head south. Take a right on to Main Street in Union Bridge, MD and continue as Main Street turns into route 75 and just stay on 75 as it takes you into Libertytown, MD.

Scenery

Very beautiful scenery with many stretches in nice cool woodlands. You can also find several covered bridges just off the main route. Carroll County, MD is one of the prettier farm counties in the State of Maryland. Thurmont, MD is near Camp David and Catoctin Mountain Park (CMP). CMP as many trails and fishing. Route 550 is a very pretty road with several fruit stands. Thurmont also has several good country stylerestaurants.

Drive Enjoyment

There are twists, turns and good straight-aways on this route. The roads are all asphalt which are fairly well maintained.

Tourism Opportunities

Several goodrestaurantsand fruit stands are available. AroundHalloween, one farmer near Creagerstown, has a Pumpkin Cannon. It works with compressed air and can fire a small pumpkin 100 yards or so.

Great combination of sweepers and twisties. The scenery is great, and it's never very crowded. A big plus is there's a lot of smaller places to get good food. Use Thurmont as the top-off point before you do the Catcotin side of the loop, as there aren't many places to stop if you're low on fuel.

I rode this route on a Honda CTX1300. The roads were interesting. Of course all of the restaurants were closed due to COVID-19. There is a nice park close to the start of the route that we used for a break between riding to Libertytown and after completing the route.

Took this in my Corvette today, with the top down and the wind blowing across my bald pate. Excellent route! I did take a wrong step out of Libertytown, from MD-75 out of New Market, but I straightened myself out and had an excellent ride. MD-77, especially through the Catoctin Mountains, could have been made with twisty-turny-loving vehicles in mind. It may be even better on a motorcycle, but I was smilin' all the way!
