Written Directions

From Jct. 260 and Rt. 261 located 3 miles west of Eagar, AZ. head toward Big Lake Rec. Area, then at the Jct. of 261 and 273 turn back north to Rt. 260.

Scenery

Steep climb and tight curves to above 9,000 ft. there is a scenic overlook just a few miles from the start and it's worth a stop to see the valley below. As you continue it's obvious the damage done by recent wildfires, still plenty of pine and Aspen trees in the higher altitudes, as you continue you will see why this is call Mt. Baldy, the trees are gone it's wide open rolling grass lands.

Drive Enjoyment

Rt. 261 is average with plenty of tar snakes, sharp curves and hills, 273 on the other hand is very good, with gentle curves and lots of hills.

Tourism Opportunities

Along Rt. 273 there are several hiking trail heads, small lakes for fishing and several wilderness camping areas. Four miles south of Jct. 273 and 260 there is a general store.

This is a great little and mostly undiscovered gem in the White Mountains of Arizona. Be prepared for some steep climbs out of or near Eager and the sit back and enjoy the scenery and Sweeping curves near Big Lake and back to the main road from Pinetop and Showlow. If you up for it take the turnoff towards Alpine and grab some great grub for lunch or connect to AZ191 and the Coronado Trail aka “the devil’s Highway”.
